Frequently Asked Questions

I want to tell a story. What do I do?

Take a look at our upcoming show themes on our homepage and see where your story might fit best. Email a simple story pitch to stories@odysseystorytelling.org – one sentence or paragraph will do. Someone from the organization will get back to you shortly!

What are the basic guidelines for storytelling at Odyssey?

Odyssey stories are told from the heart. This means that tellers only memorize a few lines from their stories, and notes and props are not permitted. Stories average 8-10 minutes in length. They should have a beginning, a middle, and an end, and be about the teller – not about someone else. Stories should show how the events transformed the storyteller. Don’t worry. We will help you!

Do you coach storytellers?

We do! We can provide you with as much or little support as you want before you take the stage. Each show also has a rehearsal the week before the performance, where tellers get feedback on their story and give feedback to their fellow storytellers. This is where the storyteller community begins to take shape.

When do Odyssey Storytelling shows take place?

Live shows take place every first Thursday of the month (unless otherwise noted) at The Screening Room, 127 E. Congress Street, in downtown Tucson. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and shows start at 7. Shows usually end at about 9 p.m.

What can I expect at an Odyssey Storytelling show?

After three storytellers, there’s a brief intermission during which audience members can chat and buy refreshments at the theater counter. Audience members can also enter their name in a hat for the chance to tell an impromptu three-minute story onstage. Attendees can make 30-second community announcements, after which the storytelling continues. Shows usually end by 9 p.m. You can expect to laugh, cry, and help build your community by bearing witness to the tellers’ real-life experiences!

How do I get tickets for an Odyssey Storytelling live show?

Advance tickets are available online at this site, and tickets are available at the door. Tickets cost $12 for general admission and $10 for people with a school ID (including students, staff, and educators).

Where can I park near The Screening Room?

The paid Pennington Street Garage is just around the corner at 110 E. Pennington Street. Or, take the Sun Link streetcar and get off at the Stone & Congress stop just a couple hundred feet from The Screening Room’s door.

How can I get more involved with Odyssey Storytelling?

We’re always looking for volunteers. Currently we need volunteers who are interested in social media and marketing, fundraising, videography, grant writing, and public outreach, as well as volunteers to help set up each show. If you’re interested in curating or producing a show, we offer annual workshops. Email stories@odysseystorytelling.org for more information.

How can I financially support Odyssey Storytelling?

You can make a donation anytime on our ticket site. You can also subscribe to our Patreon group in exchange for season tickets and occasionally merchandise! We’re always looking for corporate or individual sponsors, and since we’re a 501(c)(3), a portion of that sponsorship is tax deductible (check with an accountant for details).
